FDA Issues Highest-Risk Recall for Lay’s Classic Chips in Two States, Citing Potential Fatal Risk

Frito-Lay issued a product recall for Lay’s Classic Potato Chips spread throughout Oregon and Washington because the chips contain undeclared milk which poses severe threats to consumers with milk allergies.

The Federal Drug Administration performed a recall on several batches of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips worth 13 ounces during the month of December while it investigated profiles of milk compounds in producers. The recall affects only Lay’s Classic Potato Chips in Oregon and Washington state and excludes their remaining product lines.

Consumers who are allergic or severely sensitive to milk may experience fatal allergic reactions following the consumption of any speck of the recalled food product according to the FDA’s Dec. 16 warning.

On Monday the FDA revised its directions placing the food recall under its highest risk class Class 1 while specifying that exposure or consumption of the chips could lead to “serious adverse health consequences or death,” according to Newsweek.

The FDA classified these chips at highest risk because milk ranks among the Agency’s group of “major food allergens” which triggers serious reactions including dermatological symptoms and swelling of vocal cords and loss of consciousness in sensitive consumers.

Starting on November 3 consumers could buy these chips across stores in Washington state and Oregon. Relevant retail outlets and online stores received the batch of affected chips.

Consumer safety requires discarding Lay’s chips having a manufacturing code of either “6462307xx” or “6463307xx” and February 11 “guaranteed fresh” date immediately for anyone with milk allergies in the State’s population.

A customer alerted Frito-Lay about the invisible milk contents in their products that triggered this undated disclosure.
According to the company’s statement there have been no reports of allergic reactions connected to this recall.
