Selena Gomez Posts and Deletes Emotional Reaction to Immigration Sweeps, Sparks Controversy
On Monday, Selena Gomez shared a tearful video on Instagram reacting to the Trump administration’s nationwide immigration enforcement sweeps that resulted in over 1,000 arrests. In the now-deleted video, the Mexican-American singer and actress expressed her heartbreak, saying, “All my people are getting attacked,” while visibly sobbing.
The children. I don’t understand. I’m so sorry,” Gomez said, adding, “I wish I could do something but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.” She included an emoji of the Mexican flag alongside the words “I’m sorry”.
In a later Instagram story, Gomez had this to say regarding criticism: “Apparently it’s not ok to show empathy for people.” That one was deleted too.
The enforcement operation targeted public safety and national security threats, according to officials, and stretched from California to Texas, Georgia and Puerto Rico. Immigration and Customs Enforcement reported making more than 1,100 arrests nationwide.
Later Monday, Tom Homan, the Trump administration’s border czar, criticized Gomez in an appearance on Fox News, saying she wasn’t focused. “Why isn’t she crying for parents who buried their children because of fentanyl or crimes committed by illegal aliens?” Homan said, citing disputed claims about drug trafficking and crime.
This immigration policy by the Trump administration has ignited sharp reactions over debates in regard to the same from public figures like Gomez. Even though her posts have disappeared, they reflect the emotional burden and polarization the issue creates.
As of now, Gomez has not issued further comments on the matter.
